Gissane angle, also known as the "critical angle", is an angular measurement made directly inferior to the lateral process of the talus. It is formed by the downward and upward slopes of the calcaneal superior surface.

102 - Critical angle of Gissane *In 1947, Gissane described his critical angle or crucial angle. *He noted a distinct angular cortical platform that parallels the lateral process of the talus on lateral radiographic projection. *This cortical density represents the dense subchondral bone lying beneath the posterior, anterior and middle facets.

The sample had a mean Bohler angle of 35.4° ± 5.9° and a mean crucial angle of Gissane of 110.5° ± 7.4°. This meta-analysis showed that there was no significant difference between the two groups regarding the Böhler angle (P = 0.44), Gissane angle (P = 0.06), calcaneal width (P = 0.09) and calcaneal height (P = 0.44) postoperatively and at the last follow-up. Bohler angle and the crucial angle of Gissane are used on the evaluation of calcaneus fractures. However, few authors have described the variation of the angles when the calcaneus is growing. Boehler and Gissane angles are the corner point for calcaneal fractures. Especially, Boehler angle (BA) is the predictor of this fracture type2-4.

angle between line from highest point of anterior process to highest point of posterior facet + line tangential to superior edge of tuberosity; measured on lateral view ; normal 20-40° represents collapse of the posterior facet; increased angle of Gissane .

The Angle of Gissane is the angle formed by the intersection of downward and upward slopes of the calcaneal superior surface on lateral images.

Bohler angle and the crucial angle of Gissane were measured in 429 children. The sample was mainly composed of two groups: 9 to 12 years of age (39%) and 13 to 16 years of age (31%). In the sample group, the mean Bohler angle was 35.4° ± 5.9° (95% confidence interval [CI]: 23.6°-47.2°) and the mean crucial angle of Gissane was 110.5° ± 7.4° (95% CI: 95.7°-125.3°).

Our data suggest that there is wide disagreement among surgeons regarding Böhler's angle and the crucial angle of Gissane in displaced intra-articular

Within the relevant literature, normal GAs have been reported in the range of 96–152°. For the Sanders II patients, the Gissane angles in the post-operation group (124.3±9.6) were significantly higher compared to the pre-operation group (104.8±12.8) (Figure 4A, p<0.05). Various angles have traditionally been used when analysing lateral views of the os calcis to detect and quantify intra-articular displace-ment. Bohler’s angle4 and Gissane’s angle5 are commonly measured and used in the manage-ment of adult fractures.
